Simms was a mentor, friend and wonderful man who said goodbye to me months ago before he entered hospice, knowing he only had a few months to live. I was angry he was shutting me out of his life when it wasn't over but that was selfish of me and I was only hurt because he was such a wonderful man who befriended me as a young illustrator, just starting out. I wasn't ready to say goodbye.
He treated me as an equal but was a mentor. He always had a smile, laugh and pat on the back for me and respected my opinion and rabid passion that was a bit rough around the edges. I will miss him very much.
